Ken Burton jest muzykiem i kompozytorem, dyrygentem chóralnym i orkiestrowym, wokalistą i instrumentalistą (solo i chóry), jurorem chórów telewizyjnych oraz liderem warsztatów. Występuje w radiu i telewizji.

Działalność muzyczna Kena Burtona obejmuje szeroki zakres gatunków i ról na arenie międzynarodowej: na scenie, w telewizji, w radiu oraz w studio.

 

Regularnie dyryguje dwoma chórami - London Adventist Chorale i Croydon SDA Gospel Choir, a także jest założycielem kilku chórów sesyjnych: zespołu muzyki sakralnej The Adventist Vocal Ensemble (AVE) który występował w największych brytyjskich kanałach telewizyjnych, Voquality Singers (który występował również w trakcie Festiwalu Filmowego w Cannes), trio łączące różne gatunki muzyki klasycznej i gospelu: Dixon, Burton and Billett, a do tego Vocal Creation - nazwa używana do tworzenia filmów muzycznych.

Ken wydał kilka swoich dzieł chóralnych w wydawnictwach Faber Music, Oxford University Press i RSCM, a także jest stałym jurorem w programie Choir of the Year - konkursie, w którym w 1994 r. miał dwa własne chóry w tym samym finale, wówczas zwyciężył London Adventist Chorale. Pracuje intensywnie jako juror telewizyjny, jako jeden z jurorów dla Channel 4 Gospel Singers of The Year, dla BBC w Songs Of Praise School Choir Of The Year oraz był jednym z sędziów ósmej części nominowanej do nagrody BAFTA serii The Choir: Sing While You Work, prowadzonej przez Garetha Malone'a .

Pojawił się i pracował intensywnie nad niektórymi z największych programów w brytyjskiej telewizji i na arenie międzynarodowej, między innymi: Songs Of Praise (BBC), The X Factor (ITV), The X Factor USA (Fox), Britain’s Got Talent (ITV), Prom At Palace (BBC), Eastenders (BBC), Soul Noel (BBC) i wiele innych. Jego role w programach obejmowały występy, udział solistów, dyrygowanie, aranżowanie, reżyserię muzyczną i produkcję. W 2013 roku badał zmieniające się oblicza i zasady muzyki gospel na zaproszenie w The Choir BBC of Radio 3. Jego chór Adventist Vocal Ensemble regularnie uczestniczy w największych świętach roku (Wielkanoc i Boże Narodzenie) dla BBC Radio 2 Good Morning Sunday. Ken przyczynił się w znacznym stopniu do licznych programów w The Hope Channel, międzynarodowym kanale telewizyjnym należącym i zarządzanym przez organizację Kościoła Adwentystów Dnia Siódmego. W 2014 i 2015 roku zaprezentował dwa dziewięcioczęściowe programy muzyczne Music in My Life: with Ken Burton for Life Connect TV, gdzie przeprowadzał wywiady i nagrywał muzykę z wieloma uznanymi i początkującymi muzykami gospel i współczesnej muzyki chrześcijańskiej z całej Europy.

Jego praca nie ogranicza się jednak wyłącznie do gatunku muzyki gospel. Ma również solidne podstawy w zakresie muzyki klasycznej, która była jego przedmiotem studiów. Pracował jako dyrygent, przygotowując chóry do wykonania dzieł na dużą skalę, takich jak Requiem Verdiego i Deutsche Requiem Brahmsa. Prowadził, pisał i aranżował liczne utwory chóralne i orkiestrowe dla orkiestr, w tym London Mozart Players, CBSO, Orchestra Of The Swan i dla różnych orkiestr BBC. Dyrygował orkiestrą i chórem w trakcie sześćdziesiątego dorocznego wykonania Mesjasza Haendla w Metropolitan Baptist Church w Waszyngtonie. W 2012 roku gościł na Proms Plus, prowadząc koncert zawierający między innymi Tippett's A Child Of Our Time, a także występował na Proms.

 

Oprócz regularnych działań opartych na występach, był zaangażowany w Kijani Kenya Trust - organizacji charytatywnej z Wielkiej Brytanii, która zbiera fundusze na projekty związane z HIV i ochroną w Kenii. Jego podróże do Kenii obejmowały wizyty w wielu domach dziecka, gdzie prowadzi się edukację muzyczną z sierotami, które często mają okazję występować na scenie w ramach głównego festiwalu muzycznego. W roku 2012, w roku Igrzysk Olimpijskich w Londynie, pracował jako trener wokalny na olimpiadzie kulturalnej Charity Youth Music dla Youth Music Voices w Wielkiej Brytanii, który występował w takich miejscach jak WOMAD i Royal Opera House.

Jako dyrygent i lider warsztatów prowadził chóry warsztatowe na całym świecie, często przy tej okazji komponując nowe utwory.

Ken Burton prowadził w Polsce już 6 edycji warsztatów:

- w Katowicach (5.2015) - koncert finałowy w NOSPR oglądało na żywo ok. 1800 osób,

- w Katowicach i Chorzowie (1.2016) - koncert finałowy obejrzało ok. 1000 osób całkowicie wypełniając wszelkie dostępne miejsca,

- w Pszczynie (11.2016) - koncert finałowy obejrzało ok. 900 osób wypełniając jeden z największych dostępnych lokalnych obiektów, 

- w Cieszynie (5.2017) - dla uczestników z Polski, Czech, Słowacji i Niemiec. Koncert finałowy obejrzało ok. 900 osób,

- w Warszawie (11.2018) - dla uczestników z Europy, USA i Ameryki Południowej. Koncert finałowy przed kompletem publiczności odbył się w Studio Koncertowym Polskiego Radia im. Witolda Lutosławskiego

- w Katowicach (11.2019) - dla uczestników z Polski, Czech i Niemiec. Koncert finałowy w Filharmonii Śląskiej obejrzało ok. 650 osób na żywo, a kolejne 2000 obejrzało go online.

Ken Burton is an arranger and composer, choral and orchestral conductor,  broadcaster (radio and television), television choral judge, vocal and instrumental performer (solo and group), and workshop leader. 

 

His musical activities cover a wide range of genres and roles, internationally on stage, screen, airwaves and recorded media.

 

 He regularly directs two regular choirs - the London Adventist Chorale, and Croydon SDA Gospel Choir, and is founder director of several session groups: broadcast sacred music ensemble Adventist Vocal Ensemble (AVE) which has performed hundreds of songs for major national British television channels, Voquality Singers (which have also appeared as the Ken Burton Singers, and Ken Burton Voices) which has recorded and performed for major projects and events  including Marvel Films Black Panther  and Cannes Film Festival.  In addition he founded and directs the  Classical-gospel crossover trio Dixon, Burton and Billett. Adding to this group of ensembles is Vocal Creation - a name use for small ensembles put together for music video purposes. 

 

He has several of his choral works published by Faber Music, Oxford University Press and RSCM, and is a regular adjudicator for Choir Of The Year - the very competition where, in 1994, he had his two regular choirs in the same final, the London Adventist Chorale winning. He works extensively as a TV judge; as one of the judges for Channel 4’s Gospel Singers Of The Year, BBC Songs Of Praise School Choir Of The Year, and was one of the judges of the eight part BAFTA-nominated series The Choir: Sing While You Work, presented by Gareth Malone.

 

He has appeared and worked extensively on some of the biggest programmes on British television and internationally, among them Songs Of Praise (BBC) The X Factor (ITV), The X Factor USA(Fox), Britain's Got Talent (ITV), Prom At The Palace (BBC), Eastenders (BBC), Soul Noel (BBC) and numerous others. His roles on the programmes have included performing, vocal contracting, conducting, arranging, musical directing, and production. In 2013 he was one of six invited choral figures to guest present on BBC Radio 3's The Choir, where he explored the changing face and settings of gospel music. His Adventist Vocal Ensemble has been a regular contributor to the biggest days in the calendar (Easter and Christmas) for BBC Radio 2 Good Morning Sunday. Ken has contributed extensively to numerous programmes on The Hope Channel, an international television channel owned and operated by the Seventh-Day Adventist Church organisation. In 2014 and 2015 he presented two nine-part series programmes of Music In My Life: With Ken Burton for Life Connect TV, where he interviewed and made music with a number of established and aspiring gospel and contemporary Christian music artists from across Europe.

 

His work, however, is not confined to the genre of gospel music. He also has a strong background of (and actually studied) Classical music, and has worked as a chorusmaster training choirs to sing large-scale works such as Verdi Requiem, and Brahms Deutsches Requiem. He has conducted, written and arranged numerous choral and orchestral works for orchestras including London Mozart Players, CBSO, Orchestra Of The Swan, and various BBC orchestras. He conducted the 60th annual performance of Handel’s Messiah at the Metropolitan Baptist Church in Washington DC. He has been a television guest on Proms Plus and Proms Extra,  and has conducted and performed at the Proms. In 2017 he wrote a piece  Many Are The Wonders for professional British choir ORA, which recorded an album of the same name.

In addition to his regular performance based activities, he has been involved with the Kijani Kenya Trust - a UK based charity which raises funds for HIV and conservation projects in Kenya. His trips to Kenya have involved visits to a large number of orphanages, where music education work is carried out with the orphans, who often have the opportunity to perform on stage as part of the major music festival.

In 2012, the year of the London Olympics, he worked as a vocal coach for the UK Charity Youth Music’s cultural olympiad choir Youth Music Voices which performed at venues including WOMAD and the Royal Opera House.

 

As a guest conductor and workshop leader, he has led workshop choirs across the world, often being commissioned to write new pieces for them.

Ken Burton has already led 6 editions of the workshop in Poland:
- in Katowice (5.2015) - the final concert in NOSPR was watched live by approx. 1800 people
- in Katowice and Chorzów (1.2016) - the final concert was watched by about 1000 people completely filling all available places
- in Pszczyna (11.2016) - the final concert was watched by about 900 people filling one of the largest available local facilities
- in Cieszyn (5.2017) - in the meadway for the participants from Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Germany, the final concert was watched by about 900 people

- in Warsaw (11.2018) - with participants from Europe, USA and South America. The Final Concert took place in prestigeous Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of Polish Radio, with full audience watching it

- in Katowice (11.2019) - with participants from Poland, Germany and Czech Republic. The Final Concert was watched in Silesian Philharmony in Katowice by appx 650 people, while another 2000 were watching it online.
